Tacos Mexico
One of the things I miss most about San Diego, where I lived for a year before moving here, is that you can’t turn around without running into a good taqueria. So finding a place to satisfy my taco cravings was pretty high on my priority list after arriving in Cary. I know there are quite a number of taquerias in Durham, which I’m looking forward to checking out, but happily I have a go-to spot that’s closer to home.
Tacos Mexico is in a modest brick building on Williams Street in Apex and is home to some superb tacos. The interior is cozy and colorful and service is friendly. Good chips and salsa and excellent queso, made with the good stuff. No Velveeta here. I’m also happy that they offer agua frescas (made with water, sugar, and fruit), a drink I became addicted to in San Diego.
The menu is extensive but I have to admit that I rarely order anything other than tacos. I did once try the enchiladas with verde sauce and did not find them to be memorable. Besides, the tacos are just so good. I’ve ordered them with sides of beans and rice, which were simply standard, so now I just order the tacos a la carte, which at $1.85 a pop, is a really good deal. I’ve tried the barbacoa (slow cooked, shredded beef), carnitas (shredded pork), and pastor (sliced pork). All are excellent, with juicy, tender, flavorful meat, but I have to say the pastor, with its subtle flavor of pineapple, is my favorite. They also offer lengua (tongue) for the more adventurous.
Each taco comes in a double layer of corn tortillas and is dressed only with onion and cilantro, the way a taco should be. You are not going to find layers of lettuce, sour cream, and cheese designed to mask the meat’s lack of flavor in your typical American-style taco.
Tacos Mexico is a local gem. Go get some tacos!

Well, now I want tacos… mmmmmm…
Find any good fish tacos yet?
Also — too bad you didn’t have a chance to sample from the Burrito Bunker on Franklin St in CH. It wasn’t a full menu (thus the name) but good ol’ fashioned burrito goodness. Good guac too.
Um, those tacos look delicious. I need some now!
Have you been to Mez in RTP? I don’t think it’s very authentic Mexican, but it is seriously tasty. It’s off of the Page Road exit on I-40.
I haven’t been to Mez, thanks for the suggestion!
Wow, this place sounds good. Gonna try it next time in Apex.
If you are looking for good, authentic tacos and Mexican in Cary, Pancho Villa’s must be tried. They are in the Chatham Square shopping center, 744 E Chatham St. Luis, the owner, is actually Guatemalan, but does a great job with Mexican. Like most of my favorite places, it is very authentic (think “nasty bits” and Tony Bourdain authentic), but they have American-friendly fare, as well. Also like all of my favorite places, it is not much to look at, and the ambiance… let’s just say it may not be first date material. But the food… mmmmm…..
Thanks for the tip! I’ll have to check it out, it’d be great to have some place in Cary to satisfy my taco cravings and not always have to go out to Apex.
After living in the Phoenix, AZ area for over 12 years I was on a quest for good Mexican food in the Triangle. After trying several, Pancho Villa’s is the best and most authentic. On Taco Tuesday’s it’s a dollar a taco and they are more than worth it! Delicioso!
El Dorado is decent but not as good as Pancho’s.
My wife and I are on a constant quest to find new Mexican spots. She is from the Phoenix area as well. We both love spicy foods (specifically queso dips). We just tried a new one tonight, Tijuana Flats, off of Millbrook Rd (not sure we need to go back).
We’ve still yet to find anything that beats Armadillo Grill’s tacos and chili con queso dip. Baja Burrito, off of Western Blvd., has some pretty incredible hot sauce that they put in their 2 pound burrito. Their Mole Chicken is where’s it at. Look forward to trying the place you mentioned above. I know your entry is over a year old but glad I stumbled upon. It looks good.
HI Chad, sorry it took me so long to respond, but if you haven’t already, I highly recommend trying Dos Taquitos Centro, in downtown Raleigh. The food blew me away.
And Heidi, after your seconding the suggestion for Pancho Villa’s, I have to try it now!
